Abortion in the spotlight

AN event will take place in Dumfries today (Sat) examining abortion law in Scotland.

It is being organised by Women for Independence in response to the Roe v Wade ruling in the USA.

And it will be the group’s first in-person National Council in two years at St George’s Church Hall.

However, it is a hybrid event and women are invited to join online as well as in person.

A spokeswoman said: “The focus topic of this session is ‘Abortion is Healthcare’ and will look at current law in Scotland, the call for protest buffer zones, what our rights are now and what needs to change.

“The overturning of Roe vs Wade in the US in the last fortnight has highlighted how quickly rights can be removed. It’s clear that ensuring abortion rights in Scotland are not eroded has never been more important.

“Women for Independence invite women from across Scotland to join our National Council either in Dumfries or virtually, to add your voice to our campaign.”

There will be open mic sessions and then members will join Dumfries Anti-Rape Group in their demonstration on the High Street at 1 pm.
