Like father, like son!

YOUNGSTER Lewis Gibson never thought he’d ever get the opportunity to play alongside his dad and current Queen of the South manager Wullie.

But there’s a chance the father and son combo could be playing at the same time for the Doonhamers this season.

The 17-year-old – who like his old man when he was younger is a left winger – has impressed the Palmerston faithful with his cameos in pre-season and in the Premier Sports Cup.

And Lewis admits he’d love to create some history and share the pitch with his father.

He said: “It’s a wee bit different as I’ve never had a coach that I’m as close to. He understands me a lot more than anybody else, it’s good. I’ll be honest, I didn’t think I’d potentially get to play beside my dad but it’s a good chance to do that.

“My dad is my role model, he’s played similar positions to me in the past, it’s good to have someone like him help me.

“As soon as my dad got the reserves job, he said there was a pathway to get into the senior squad and that’s happened for the likes of myself, Dom McMahon, Ryan Muir, Jay Burns and Ben Johnstone.

“It’s been brilliant so far. Going full-time it’s a big difference but I’m really enjoying it. I’m hoping to get a couple of chances on the field during the season and see how it goes from there.”

Meanwhile, livewire Lee Connelly insists his only aim this season is to fire Queens back to where they belong.

The winger was one of the Doonhamers’ standout players last campaign but couldn’t help the Dumfries men avoid relegation to League One.

During the summer, there was a lot of speculation that Connelly would find a move elsewhere but he decided to remain at Palmerston Park.

And during the League Cup campaign, he has impressed again playing alongside attackers Connor Murray and in-form Ruari Paton.

Connelly said: “It’s good to be back here, it’s been really enjoyable. The first two weeks of pre-season was hard but that’s what you expect.

“Last year as I had left Sunderland, I had to come on trial at Queens but this season the club wanted me back and I was happy to do so.

“During the close season it was weird and I had to be patient. When it was closer to the season starting, I just wanted to back playing as I get bored quite easy so to be in training every day was a big thing.

“I know the squad from last season and the new boys who have come in, I know the most of them too. We have a good squad and it’s been good training with them.

“The aim is to get straight back up where Queens belong.”
