To celebrate her freedom and nationality, Veronika Zolotoverka went along to the town’s Hugh Macdiarmid Memorial with a Ukraine flag.
She stood there draped in the colours of her homeland in solidarity with the late Langholm-born poet and political figure, who was a founding member of the National Party of Scotland, forerunner to the modern Scottish National Party.
Veronika, 32, spent the last six years working as a professional theatre director and performer at a theatre in Severodonetsk, Ukraine.
Since then, the theatre has been obliterated by Russian shelling and Veronika escaped to Dumfriesshire alongside her mother when Russians occupied the region in May.
