Town centre bus stop deemed ‘unsafe’

ANTI social behaviour in Gretna has led to the cancellation of evening services at one bus stop in the town.

Stagecoach have announced that their weekend evening services, travelling both ways. will no longer stop at Central Avenue on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays after 7.30 pm.

The decision is due to anti-social behaviour and safety-related issues at the town centre stop.

Explaining more, a Stagecoach spokesperson said: “We have recently been experiencing some anti-social behaviour and safety related issues at the Central Avenue stop in Gretna, and so reluctantly we have taken the decision to stop serving this stop.

“This decision has only been taken due to the continued issues we have experienced with individuals jeopardising the safety of not only themselves, but also others by tampering with operational elements of our vehicles, and this has unfortunately meant that it is unsafe for us to serve these stops at the times stated above.

“We’re sorry that we have had to put this measure in place due to the behaviour of a small group of individuals, and for any customers wishing to board or alight after 7.30 pm, this can be done at either the Solway Lodge or Annan Road stop.”

This change will remain in place until further notice and will be reviewed in due course.

Meanwhile, members of the public have expressed their frustration on social media.

Jane Power said: “What is the world coming to when buses can’t stop at designated places because of anti social and dangerous behavior?”

Agreeing, Carol Walker said: “It’s the public again who suffer and people who need this service are left wanting.”

Samantha Lockhart added: “Surely it would be best to stop the anti social behaviour than take away a service that people actually need?”
