ROBIN made personal history by winning his first silver in the Men’s O65 draw. Having won the British Masters in February, he came into the tournament as one to watch. However, he had a tough draw, with a string of five and four game matches on route to the final.
After a breathless last 16 game against England’s Simon Evenden (11-7, 10-12, 12-10, 11-4), the quarter final against fellow Scot Paul Harris was a classic in the making. With Paul going 2-1 up after the third, he looked set to take the victory before Robin found another gear, closing the match out 11-8, 11-5. The semi-final was no less forgiving, another five game cracker against England’s Ripley Oyler, which finished 13-15, 11-2, 4-11, 13-11, 11-4 in the Scot’s favour.
Although the final against the number one seed Pierr Roodt was done in three, finishing 11-4, 11-3,-11-5, Robin fought hard throughout and was a deserved silver medallist.
Robin said: “It was a terrific experience travelling to Poland for the World Masters.
“It was great to get to the final, though the game itself was a bit disappointing for myself. The South African no one seed Pierr Roodt has won several World Masters titles and was sheer class on the day.
“I’m looking forward to the new season ahead. My local club in Dumfries are holding a regional masters tournament on the 24/25 September, where we hope we can get a good entry. The club are also holding open days and club nights for anyone interested in taking up squash.”
