Hidden treasure hunt

DO you have any lost masterpieces in your attic?

An auction house is urging people in the region to check their lofts and cupboards to see what’s lurking there.
The specialists from fine art auctioneers, Lyon & Turnbull in Edinburgh, are coming to the region on September 10 to look at everything from paintings to jewellery to furniture.
Everyone is welcome to pop along to the sessions at Kirkcudbright Galleries but booking is essential for the 15-minute long valuation slots.
As well as casting her experienced eye over items brought in by the public during the day, at 6 pm, Alice Strang, a well-known figure in the art world and Lyon & Turnbull’s senior specialist in modern and contemporary art, will give a free talk on The Art of Collecting at the galleries in the evening.
Her lecture will take place against a backdrop of an exhibition of illustrations by Glasgow School of Art trained Jessie M. King, who lived in the town, and was one of the leading illustrators of the day.
James MacNaught, associate director and head of Lyon & Turnbull’s Glasgow and west coast Scotland team, is one of the specialists who will be in Kirkcudbright on the day.
He said: “We’re very much looking forward to seeing what treasures people will unearth and bring along for us to look at on 10th September.
“Kirkcudbright has such a rich artistic history. There’s bound to be some hidden gems in homes around the area.
“We love getting out and about and finding out how people came by objects and works of art: often they are found in the most unusual and surprising places.”
