Pothole damage sparks roads fear

Mel Stewart-Wyke was enjoying a day out with her husband in the region in May when their vehicle hit a large pothole on the B725 near Glencaple.

They say that swerving to avoid the crater could have resulted in a serious collision had a car been travelling in the opposite direction.

As a result, extensive damage was done to the front suspension of Mel’s vehicle and one of the rear alloys was sheared in half by the impact.

After putting in a claim to Dumfries and Galloway Council, they eventually received a response denying liability, stating that the road was deemed fine following a recent inspection.

The incident has left Mel footing a large bill for repairs.

She said: “There has to be over £1000 worth of damage, one of the wheels split in half.

“The pothole was supposedly repaired a couple of weeks afterwards.

“I am sure this road is not inspected enough and the potential for a serious accident is high, given the state it is in.”

A spokesperson for Dumfries and Galloway Council yesterday said: “The B725 is inspected monthly.

“All roads in Dumfries and Galloway are regularly inspected in accordance with current policy.”
