Befrienders needed

MORE befrienders are needed in Annandale and Eskdale to help support older people.

The Food Train Friends group is looking for more volunteers to help meet post-pandemic demand for their service.

Members from throughout the region visited the warm, welcoming social space at Food Train’s new headquarters in Dumfries town centre recently, pictured – enjoying lunch, cake, card games and a prize quiz.

The Friends service, which started in Dumfries more than ten years ago and was rolled out across the region in the years that followed, provides one-to-one befriending in person and over the phone, as well as the opportunity for monthly group outings locally in and around Annan.

The service is looking forward to developing – with the need for it more acute than ever with deep social isolation concerns following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Regional manager Isobel Henkelmann said: “We have received a huge number of referrals for the Friends service and are keen to help every single person. However, we are short of volunteer befrienders across the region and would like to appeal to anyone who thinks they can help to come forward.

“We need one-to-one volunteer befrienders to visit customers in their homes to provide some company, as well as volunteers to help on group outings. We would love to hear from anyone interested.”
