Support urged for baton relay
CLIMATE ACTION HEROES. . . Members of the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve team

IT’S an early start for anyone wanting to catch the Running Out of Time Relay, which will be passing through Langholm tomorrow.

Starting today in Glasgow, the aim of the relay is to pass through 18 different countries and reach Sharm El-Sheikh on November 6.

Set to be the world’s longest relay ever attempted, it is delivering a climate action message from the public to world leaders gathered in Egypt at COP27.

Runners ranging from kids to presidents have signed up to carry the baton in five to ten km stages of the route which crosses seas, mountain ranges, glaciers, and deserts, villages, towns and capital cities.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend and show their support for the relay and show world leaders the strength of feeling there is for tacking climate change now.

RELAY ADVENTURE. . . The relay will pass through 21 major cities on its way to Egypt

Dumfries and Galloway has been selected for the relay’s route because one of 27 specially-chosen climate action projects in the UK is located here: the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve.

The local community, along with thousands of people worldwide, altogether raised £6 million to purchase 10,500 acres of land and convert it into a large-scale nature reserve.

If you wish to support the relay, the baton handover in Langholm will take place at 6.45 am at the Buccleuch Centre.
