Cash found for more crisis grants

CRISIS grants will continue to be given out in the region this winter after council bosses found extra money.

Members of the communities committee agreed to transfer £500,000 surplus covid recovery cash into the Scottish Welfare Fund.

And it can then be used for emergency crisis grants and community care payments.

The move was necessary after it emerged that the local Scottish Welfare Fund is in huge demand and could be closed early.

Councillors heard that some desperate residents have applied for multiple grants already this year. There is a limit of three per customer per financial year but extra can be given out in exceptional circumstances.

The transfer will allow for the continuation of lifeline crisis grants until the end of this financial year and crucially cover the winter period.
