In a post on social media, the owner of the building, David Thompson, said: “The decision was made due to NatWest applying, without permission, to put a second door on my property and then moving the ATM inwards.

“This was not acceptable to me and I guess would not have passed the planning department nor Historic Scotland as the building is listed.

“I am sorry that this will remove a free service to Lochmaben but I hope that you can agree that the company were out of order, just like their ATM.”

The removal means that the town will no longer have a free cash machine apart from on a Monday morning when the mobile Royal Bank of Scotland van visits for half an hour.
