Care home move was ‘challenging’

MOVING residents from a crisis-hit care home has been a “very challenging situation” but staff have been praised for handling it “swiftly”.

Dalawoodie Nursing Home owners, Downing Care, terminated their care registration last month following the Care Inspectorate’s legal action against them.

This meant all 26 of its residents had to find alternative accommodation at short notice.

All residents took up their new accommodation last week. Most have moved to a care home, with the majority opting to go into other care homes within Nithsdale.

Dumfries and Galloway Health and Social Care Partnership (DGHSCP) staff and employees of the care home were thanked for their contribution.

DGHSCP chief officer Julie White said: “This has been a very challenging situation, but it has been managed in a way which has prioritised the welfare and wishes of the residents and their families, seeking to minimise distress and concern.

“I would commend the staff from the Health and Social Care Partnership who moved swiftly to ensure that preferred alternate accommodation was secured when it became apparent that Dalawoodie Nursing Home would close – following the legal action initiated by the Care Inspectorate.

“In addition, I would note the work that has taken place within Dalawoodie, as our staff have worked alongside the care home’s own staff to ensure continuity of care during this transition.

“All care homes within Dumfries and Galloway are privately owned, and the Partnership works closely with all care homes and values the extremely important contribution they make to health and social care within the region.

“The loss of the care home obviously has an impact on capacity, and work continues to take place to strengthen and expand older adult care home provision within the region, as part of an ongoing partnership working with independent providers.”

Dalawoodie Nursing Home now has no residents, sits empty and has closed as a care home.
