GRETNA’S Millennium Milepost was given a fresh coat of colourful paint on Monday.

Made by Sustrans, Millennium Mileposts are cast-iron sculptures that help people navigate the National Cycle Network across Scotland.

The new design for the milepost in question on route 7 was made by Gretna Primary School pupil Gregor, chosen by Twitter from a competition run by the school.

Gregor and another student volunteered to paint the old black post with vivid colours of the school, as voted on in the poll posted on social media by Sustrans Scotland on October 24.

Laura White, from Sustrans Scotland, said: “We had a fun transformation of the Gretna Millennium Milepost today on route seven into a winning design by Gregor from primary 5 of Gretna Primary School.

“Lots of people stopped to say they’d not noticed it before, so the new colours will definitely raise awareness of the National Cycle Network locally.

“Huge thanks to mini milepost volunteers Gregor and John, and to Mrs McConnachie and Rhian for helping make it look absolutely fabulous in school colours, among others.”
