STUDENTS and guests from across the globe arrived in Lockerbie yesterday to attend the 34th memorial of the air disaster.
A low key event was held at the Dryfesdale Cemetery to remember all 270 people who died when Pan Am 103 exploded on December 21 1988.
Leading the tributes were senior pupils from Lockerbie Academy who laid wreaths in remembrance of those that perished. They were accompanied by deputy head Catherine McNay and acting head teacher Kerry Currie.
School captains Rose Byers and Job Keegan Paul read out speeches to the small crowd and Harris Morford played a small piece on the bagpipes to finish the event.
Mrs McNay said: “The attack was a tragedy and we will remember those lost, but the links we have forged with other countries due to the attack cannot be understated.”
Also in attendance was Kinley Gaudette, a remembrance scholar at Syracuse University, who laid a floral plane tribute.
She gave a speech during the memorial and afterwards shared her feelings with the Annandale Herald, saying: “After spending years studying these events, to be in this town I’ve read about, where it all happened, is totally surreal.”
Meanwhile, US Consulate General Edinburgh Jack Hillmeyer laid a wreath too. He was a guest of Dumfries and Galloway Council and accompanied by Annandale North councillors and ward officers.
