Cancer unit benefits from Anne’s fundraising flurry
CHEQUE DONATION . . . the donation is handed over to Laura Wallace, charge nurse at DGRI oncology unit. Anne Allan (left) and her sister Elizabeth Sandford are holding the cheque. Behind Anne is her daughter, Pamela Sawden, a critical care nurse at DGRI

Anne Allan’s friends and family helped her raise the money after her successful treatment for breast cancer finished last year. She rang the end of treatment bell in DGRI in August 2022 and began raising funds immediately afterwards.

Anne said: “I have had such a wonderful outcome from my breast cancer treatment over the past 12 months, due largely to the fantastic care and professional treatment I have had from the DGRI oncology staff, with a little help from God looking favourably on me.

“I rang the bell in the oncology unit on August 12, which was the ‘glorious 12th’ for more than one reason. It also acted as a starting gun for my family to help me raise money to give a little back by way of thanks for the diligence of the staff in oncology.”

Over the next few months, Anne, her family, her friends and local businesses raised the money with a sponsored walk up Criffel, and a Christmas wreath-making class, an exhibition of wreaths, a coffee evening and a raffle in Creca village hall.

Accompanied by her sister Elizabeth Sandford and her daughter Pamela Sawden, Anne handed the generous cheque over to oncology charge nurse Laura Wallace on behalf of the Dumfries and Galloway Health Board Endowment Fund just before Christmas.

Nick Mitchell, the fund’s operational manager, said: “The fund is hugely grateful for this donation. It is tremendous to see how many people – friends, family and others – gave their time, effort and money to help Anne raise this extremely generous amount.

“Donations like this allow staff at DGRI and across NHS Dumfries and Galloway to provide the best care they can to everyone affected.”
