US adventure beckons for school pals

BEST friends Tristan Woolley and Josh Halliday have been revealed as the Syracuse Scholars for 2023-24.

The boys are classmates at Lockerbie Academy and also play American football together for East Kilbride Pirates.

They were chosen by a panel to represent the town in the 35th anniversary year of the Lockerbie Air Disaster.

Tristan, who is from Ecclefechan, said: “I’ve wanted the Syracuse scholarship ever since I started Lockerbie Academy, but getting it feels so surreal. When I found out me and my best friend had been given the amazing opportunity it felt like all the hard work was finally worth it. “I’m really looking forward to experiencing everything Syracuse had to offer, including all of the amazing courses to pick from. I think I would like to study a music and politics course along with others that wouldn’t be available in the UK.”

Josh is equally excited and said: “I applied for the Syracuse scholarship as I believe it is a great opportunity to represent Lockerbie and also explore a new part of the world. Since I heard about this scholarship in S2, I have been eager to get it and I am excited that I have been selected.

“When I am in Syracuse, I plan to study a business management course while also prioritising my role as a scholar, creating active links between myself and pupils in Lockerbie Academy.

“I also look forward to making the most of Syracuse’s fitness facilities, such as the Barnes Center, meeting new people from all backgrounds and watching Syracuse Orange.”
