Villagers plans Coronation celebrations

IN the summer of 1953 a cherry tree was planted in Moniaive to mark Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation.

That tree, which takes pride of place in the centre of the Dumfriesshire village, has since bloomed into becoming a landmark and popular meeting place for friends.

Now, 70 years later, Moniaive residents have planted the seed for another special royal tribute for the Coronation of King Charles on May 8 this year.

Sue Grant, secretary of Glencairn Community Council, said: “We want to mark the King’s Coronation just like the village did for the Queen’s all those years ago.

“We intend on planting another cherry tree outside the village hall (Glencairn Memorial Institute) with a plaque dedicated to the King’s Coronation.

“And while the cherry tree was planted in the centre of the village for the Queen’s Coronation, it has never had a plaque or anything like that. But it has a new sandstone surround and we plan on carving into that to mark both the Queen’s and King’s Coronation.”

Community council members are now digging into costings and will finalise the cherry tree and plaque plans at their next meeting on March 6.

Another proposal put forward is for a tea dance and screening of the Coronation in Moniaive Masonic Hall.

As this would occur during Moniaive Folk Festival, discussions are to be held with the Folk Festival Committee.
