Ex Man U star offers coaching insight

FORMER Manchester United player and assistant manager Mike Phelan was in Gretna last week to deliver a coaching masterclass.

Gretna FC 2008 hosted Mike and his team from Sensible Soccer Ltd last Thursday night with coaches attending from all over Dumfries and Galloway and Cumbria.

At first the coaches had a quick chat about what Sensible Soccer is, and they spoke briefly about their history, then it was time to get into the training session.

Gretna U15s were chosen to train at the session where Mike and his team worked on space awareness and possession of the ball.

To finish off, the lads went on to their favourite drill, shooting.

Claire Kirkpatrick, one of the U15 team coaches, said: “It was a very proud moment for Shaun and myself when the Under 15s were chosen to train at the session.

“When they found out there was a lot of excitement. We have a few Man United fans in the team.

“I would like to say a big thank you to Mike and his team, for making the boys feel at ease. I think there was a couple of lads that were a bit star struck when they arrived.”

When the session was over, there was an opportunity for pictures and autographs.

After that, the attending coaches enjoyed a Q and A session with Mike and his team. They heard about the famous balloon and pizza gate incidents and were also given some great coaching advice.

Thanks are expressed to all the coaches, Gretna FC 2008 Under 15s for their efforts, and finally to Sensible Soccer Ltd for coming to Raydale Park.
