NEW Scottish Health Secretary Michael Matheson has already been invited to visit Newton Stewart to discuss reinstating the town’s hospital.
Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson, above, wasted no time in getting in touch with Mr Matheson within minutes of his appointment this week.
Mr Carson said it was important to strike while the iron was hot and make him fully aware of the local health problems.
He said: “I think it is crucial that the new Cabinet Secretary is brought up to speed as to the situation in Newton Stewart and Kirkcudbright where the cottage hospitals remain mothballed.
“More than 4000 people signed a public petition calling for an immediate return of local health services delivered from these hospitals, including palliative, end of life and stepdown care.
“I believe it would be a worthwhile visit to meet members of the local action group who like me are anxious to see a range of vital health services re-instated as a matter of urgency.”
He awaits a response and added: “Hopefully he will give it careful consideration and respond positively as I know the new First Minister had previously taken a keen interest in our cottage hospitals.”
