Wallace has suffered play-off final heartache twice with the League Two club already including last year’s agonising final defeat to FC Edinburgh

He hailed Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Dumbarton as ‘massive’ and believes the Galabankies should have won by an even greater margin after having two goals chalked off and also missing a number of other chances.

Wallace said: “It probably should have been more, I think, in the first half definitely. The second half was just about seeing the game out and making sure we didn’t give them another chance. It should have been four or five in the first half.”

The former Morton midfielder netted Annan’s third with a tap in, he added: “The goalie’s made a good save and I’m just there to tap it in. It’s just about getting in the right area and expecting it to fall to you.

“The way other results went is ideal for us. Anyone can beat anyone in this league so we just have to work hard.

“That was the first time we beat them. It’s massive for us. If we do get in the play-offs, we have to get that wee psychological edge because we’ve lost three games to Dumbarton.

“I’ve been here twice now and lost the play-off final twice, so hopefully I can correct that this time round.

“But you always want to score goals and get good wins leading up to the play-offs.

“It’s massive for us, with four games left, to go and secure it. You want it done before the last game.”

Meanwhile, Annan Athletic chief Peter Murphy said it was a pleasure to watch his side as they cruised to victory at Galabank.

The Black and Golds found themselves three goals up inside half an hour thanks to Wullie Gibson, an own goal from ex-Galabankie Martin McNiff and Wallace.

Former Annan man David Wilson netted a fabulous goal late on for the visitors with a curling free kick, but it would only be a consolation because this was Annan’s day.

Murphy’s men had failed to pick up a single point against the Sons in the first three meetings of the campaign.

They evidently saved their best until last and came away with three points following a dominant performance to keep a firm grasp on the play-offs.

Murphy said: “We could have been a little bit more ruthless, but over the last few weeks we have been creating quite a lot of chances and it’s nice to see us getting the goals. Albeit one of them was an own goal.

“On a lovely day with the weather and the way we played, it was a pleasure to watch as a manager. You don’t get many games like that.

“Hopefully we have a few more before the end of the season.”

Galabank is the venue again tomorrow as Annan welcome bottom side Albion Rovers.

It will be no easy task with the visitors fighting for their lives at the foot of the league. The Cliftonhill side will also be full of confidence after they beat Elgin 3-0 in their last outing.
