Refresh for historic plaque

A plaque at the site of the original Dumfries Infirmary marking where the first anaesthetic operation in Europe was carried out has been restored.

The sandstone tablet recognises the milestone carried out by Dr William Scott in 1846.

And it’s now looking better after Dumfries Lions Club teamed up with Edward Layden Monumental Masons to carry out restoration work.

Club spokesman John MacColl said: “We thought that it was important to have the plaque cleaned to make the inscription legible so that the public can view the information on this groundbreaking event in the medical world.

“We are grateful to Eddie Layden for carrying out the restoration work without charge.”
