KIRSTEEN Davies has had a hair-raising week after braving the shave in the first of two charity challenges.
She had her long locks cut off last weekend as part of a fundraising effort to mark the ten year anniversary of her beloved husband Alastair’s death from cancer.
And this Sunday she will be striding out, as a baldie, in the Glasgow Kilt Walk.
Both events are in aid of Marie Curie and the retired primary school teacher from Canonbie is overwhelmed that her efforts have so far raised £4189, way over her initial £1500 target.
As she limbered up for this weekend’s 14.3 mile walk, she said: “It is ten years since Alastair died of pancreatic cancer and so I’ve decided it’s time to do some more fundraising for Marie Curie.
“I am doing the Kiltwalk for them because I want others to get the help Alastair did.
“We were so incredibly fortunate during his illness to have Marie Curie nurses. All through his illness they were on-call overnight and if the pain wasn’t in control we could call on them and they would come out from Dumfries and adjust his medication. Some nights we also had a nurse with us overnight.
“It is impossible to explain how much those incredible nurses meant to us on that hard journey. So many are touched by cancer and once again I’d love to be able to help someone else get that support.”
And she revealed although her husband didn’t lose his hair during treatment, he did have his head shaved twice for charity and she replicated that deed as a way of remembering him.
Kirsteen thanked everyone who has sponsored her so far and sent messages of support.
She praised friend Lois Lane for wielding the clippers, Alistair Jagger for photos and Canonbie United Parish Church for hosting the event. The cut off hair will be sent away to be turned into wigs.
