£52,000 for community projects

SPORTING clubs and community events in the Stewartry are set to receive their share of more than £50,000 in grants.

A total of £52,174 has been earmarked in Stewartry area committee’s discretionary budget to give a helping hand to people, organisations and events in the area this year.

Following a seminar involving Dumfries and Galloway councillors last month, important issues and events were identified.

It was agreed to maintain support to Stewartry Sports Council, key facilities that contribute to the wellbeing of the community, as well as youth development activities.

Councillors are also keen to support local festivals and events through a small grants scheme of up to £500 per application.

Stewartry area committee meets next Wednesday and council officers are now proposing spending the £52,174 discretionary budget as follows: support to individuals and clubs for training and coaching through Stewartry Sports Council – £7000; support to access youth development activities for people aged 12-25 – £8000; financial support to key facilities that contribute to the wellbeing of the community and increase social contact – £25,674; community galas and events (Castle Douglas Civic Week – £2500, Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities – £2500, Dalbeattie Civic Daze – £2500) and a further £4000 to be split into £500 grants.

Councillors will discuss the budget plans at next week’s Stewartry area committee before making a final decision.
