GARDENERS. . . Barony Gardening Club on the steps of Argrennan House

BARONY Gardening Club held their most recent meeting with a visit to Argrennan House and Gardens in Kirkcudbrightshire on May 4.

The group of visitors and gardeners arrived outside the estate at 5 pm, where they were met by Argrennan head gardener Brian Connelly who was once an active member of the BGC for many years.

Argrennan House is an early-19th century building that sits within 46 acres of parkland and gardens. It is built high enough to offer splendid views over the Dee Valley, as well as providing guests with two miles of river-bank salmon fishing.

Brian invited the club into the dining room to meet the manager and share some late-afternoon tea, with refreshments provided by their chef.

There, it was explained that the estate is now owned by the RSK Group, a company dedicated to promoting conservation-based activities in engineering, training and social enterprise.

Brian explained that the development of the Argrennan House and Estate will include energy self-sufficiency, as well as fully-organic horticultural activities. But, he said, it is still very much a work in progress.

After this, Brian lead the club outside to gaze upon the acres of walled garden he had set his sights on renovating for the remainder of the trip.

The BGC’s next meeting will take place on Thursday June 1 at 7.15 pm, at the SRUC Barony Campus in Parkgate. This end-of-season social evening will include refreshments and a plant and seed swap.
