WILDFIRE broke out on grassland near Moffat on Tuesday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to the Greenhillstairs area at about 2.52 pm and spent over five hours tackling the blaze.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) spokesperson said: “Operations Control mobilised four fire appliances to the scene, where firefighters extinguished the fire in the open. Crews left at 8.39pm after ensuring the area was safe.”
Meanwhile, a ‘very high’ wildfire risk warning continues to be in place for the whole of Scotland, including Dumfriesshire, and will run until Saturday, June 10.
SFRS Station Commander John Harvey yesterday warned that even the smallest fire can spread uncontrollably and devastate entire hillsides.
He said: “We know that many people will be hoping to enjoy the outdoors when the weather is good, but we urge everyone to make sure that they don’t increase the chance of wildfire. That means being aware of the risks and following the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
“Wild and grass fires can start by the careless disposal of cigarettes and barbecues or campfires left unattended. They then have the potential to burn for days and devastate vast areas of land, wildlife and threaten the welfare of nearby communities.”
