Mum’s mystery night aims to raise awareness

A MOFFAT mum is organising a murder mystery night this weekend to fundraise in memory of her much loved son.

Sharon Duncan is hosting the wedding themed evening at Moffat Town Hall on Friday to both fundraise and raise awareness of Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

It will also be in memory of her son, David Hill, who passed away unexpectedly during a rugby match between Irish and Scottish parliamentarians last year. His passing was doubly traumatic for his family as Sharon and David’s father were unaware of any potential life threatening condition affecting their son, as Sharon told the Moffat News: “There was never any indication that David had a condition, he had played rugby all his life and he was fit and healthy up until he passed away. It just so happened that there was this genetic timebomb inside him that went off seven minutes into the game.

“We will never know why it happened on that day and at that time, but I’m doing all that I can to keep his memory alive and to raise awareness of sudden cardiac deaths because in the UK 12 young people a week are dying in the same way David did.

“It’s so awful that it takes a death to draw attention to and investigate this condition.”

Since David’s death, his family have been determined to maintain momentum through a range of fundraising events, including The Day for David event in Dumfries, a charity cycle ride from Edinburgh to Dublin to co-incide with the annual parliamentary rugby match and the murder mystery event at the town hall. The support within the town for the event has been overwhelming as Sharon continued: “The town have really pulled out all the stops for us, Julie from the town hall has been a great help with getting everything decorated and organised, so it looks like an actual wedding. The Old Well Theatre have provided actors and costumes to play out the mystery, my husband Gordon is looking forward to his role of father-of-the-bride.

Plus, a handful of businesses have donated some excellent prizes to the raffle.

“It really has turned into a community event and I couldn’t be more grateful to everyone who has given their time and support so that David’s death won’t be his legacy.”

Tickets for the murder mys tery event are still available from Moffat Town Hall and donations can be given online at: www.c-r-y.org.uk/david-hill/.
