Mothball plan for primary

TUNDERGARTH Primary is set to join the growing list of small schools in the region which are being mothballed due to low pupil numbers.

The doors will shut on the rural school near Lockerbie when term finishes next week and from August the seven enrolled pupils will be bussed to St Mungo instead.

The decision to mothball will be reviewed by education officials in April 2024.

Meanwhile, a community BBQ will take place on Thursday June 29 to celebrate the life of the school.

Current and former pupils, parents and friends are invited to the event from 4-6 pm, when there will also be the chance to tour the school and see photos from the archives.

Ae Primary is currently in the same situation after it was mothballed in March due to a lack of pupils. Children in the catchment area are instead realigned to Nethermill.

In addition, Hutton Primary at Boreland continues to be mothballed for the third year on council officer recommendation.

However, it has emerged that when parents were contacted in March to ascertain interest in attending Hutton two families responded positively.

But officials decided this was too low so they will continue to be offered places at Applegarth instead for the 2023-4 session.
