Pub roof risk fears

CONCERNS are still rife in Lockerbie about the state of the roof on the former Blue Bell Inn.

Earlier this year a slate crashed to the ground, landing on the High Street.

It was revealed at last month’s Lockerbie Community Council that the building’s roof was inspected by Dumfries and Galloway Council following the incident.

But community councillors were keen to know more about their method and findings.

And this week they said they are still waiting to hear how the inspection was carried out and what was found.

Secretary Helen Haggart said: “It’s only a matter of time before more slates come off. I have been told that it will be nails that are fatigued because they have been there so long.”

Chairperson Jan Andrews added: “We are fortunately in the summer period but if the wind picks up again, what next?

“We do not want anyone being put at risk.”

Annandale North Councillor Carolyne Wilson stressed the local authority had been out to check the property.

But community councillor Doreen Jenkins said: “Well, if they say they have checked it then it’s their responsibility, is it not?”
