Let’s ban vapes, say councillors

TWO councillors from the region are calling for a ban on disposable vapes.

Councillors Tony Berretti and Ben Dashper, who represent Mid and Upper Nithsdale and Stranraer and the Rhins respectively, will next week ask their colleagues to back a motion calling for a ban on the sale of disposable vapes to be introduced in Scotland as soon as practicably possible.

The pair have flagged up the potential health implications from vapes, both with and without nicotine, and noted that research in Australia and the USA has found the liquid content to contain substances of petrochemical origin.

They are also concerned such products are frequently targeted and marketed towards children and young people.

Furthermore, the councillors note the environmental impact of the 1.3 million discarded vapes every week in the UK, as well as the litter hazard and pollution that causes.

And they want Dumfries and Galloway Council to agrees to support a campaign by the Marine Conservation Society, Ash Scotland and Keep Scotland Beautiful to ban the manufacture and sale of disposable vapes in Scotland.

Their motion will be heard and discussed at the full council on Tuesday morning.
