A LIFEBOAT team was called into action yesterday to assist in the rescue of some cattle in the sea near Ardwell.

Members of Stranraer RNLI were called in to assist by Belfast Coastguard at 12.48 pm on Thursday after reports of two persons in the water attempting to rescue cattle that had fallen over cliffs near Float Bay.

In a statement posted online, a spokesperson for Stranraer RNLI Lifeboat said: “Upon arrival on scene, the two persons were located north of Float Bay and although in wetsuits and buoyancy aids, they were struggling to get the cattle back to shore.

“Stranraer ILB retrieved the two persons from the water to the safety of the Lifeboat and then assisted with the rescue of the two cattle who were safely brought back to shore.

“Also in attendance were HM Coastguard – Portpatrick Stranraer coastguard HM Coastguard – Drummore and Ballantrae Coastguard Rescue Team.

“The Lifeboat returned to station and was made ready for service at 3.05 pm.”
