Dumfries and Galloway Council supplied the stone which matches paving slabs already in place around the War Memorial. They also undertook all the necessary works associated with the installation. The design and lettering was done by Edward Layden, Memorial Sculptors in Dumfries.

A Rotary spokesperson said: “The siting of the Queen’s Memorial Plaque in the proximity of the War Memorial is appropriate for two reasons: the late Queen served in the military during the war and she was the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces thus respected by all who served under her.

“The War Memorial commemorates those who gave their lives for the country; The Queen’s Memorial commemorates the giving of her life to the country.”

The plaque was officially unveiled on Wednesday morning by His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Dumfries Fiona Armstrong, Lady MacGregor, accompanied by Deputy Lord Lieutenant Hardip Atwal BEM, after which piper Reilly Shearer played.
