Ten miles of pink!

A FUNDRAISING family are over the moon at the support shown for their charity event on Sunday.

Sarah and Tommy Mcdiarmid held a walk and family fun day, which raised £5114.

Added to their previous efforts, the couple, and their children Harry and Ella, have now collected £14,630 for Breast Cancer Now.

About 150 people turned out at the weekend for the ten mile sponsored walk, which started at the Lockerbie Royal Mail Delivery Office and followed some of Tommy’s postal route.

They formed a long pink line as they went north.

It finished a few hours later at Johnstonebridge Community Centre, where there were refreshments, a bouncy castle, lawn games, face painters, craft stalls, a baking stall, two tombolas and guessing competitions.

Teacher Sarah, who herself has stage four breast cancer, is delighted to have smashed their original total and raised so much for research into the disease.

She said: “We had phenomenal support on Sunday with almost 150 people joining the sponsored walk and then over 300 coming along to the Family Fun Day. It was so humbling to be joined by so many people and the sight of the line of pink stretching along the road was incredible!

“The Family Fun Day was really well attended and the stalls made a fantastic amount of money.

“The Just Giving total is currently at £14,630 and we raised £5114 on Sunday alone.”

She added: “It was an amazing event and we are so, so grateful to so many people for making it work – it was a huge team effort.”

The mum-of-two, who lives in Dumfries, hopes the money will be used to make a difference for others in the same position as her.

She was diagnosed with primary breast cancer in 2020 and had 16 months of treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy and hormone therapy, gaining the all clear in May 2021.

However, after 19 months cancer free, she was devastated to be told in February this year that it had returned and was stage four and incurable.

Sarah said: “I am fortunate that it is treatable and can only hope for more medical breakthroughs which will allow me more precious time. “My treatment schedule is very thorough and will be life-long now, I am so grateful to the staff at DGRI oncology unit for the care and support they have given me.”
