Sadly, the fairy tale season for the first-timers did not end with the lads lifting the UK Division 1 Cup, but beyond any doubt the team did the region proud.

Drawn as rank outsiders, the Carlisle based Cents, with a strong contingent of players from the Annan area, were handed the most brutal of schedules for the day.

However, despite the odds being stacked against them the Cents rose to the challenges ahead by first defeating Chichester Sharks 21-20.

The run for gold was, however, stopped short, when they were knocked out of the cup competition in the round of eight by Swansea Hammerheads 53-27.

The most valuable player ‘Golden Ball’ award went to Annan based wide receiver Dom Lewis, who found the end zone seven times. It was presented to him by fellow Annanite and head coach of the Cents Nigel ‘Nick-Nige’ Weston.

This is the first time, in 35 years of American football teams in South West Scotland and Cumbria that any team has ever broken through to the nationals.

Coach Weston said: “The team work ethic has been outstanding all season, despite being new to the league the guys have adapted and feared nothing, just worked their socks off for each other.

“Their determination has shown in their results, and with everyone giving their all at the finals to cap off a solid season, heads can be held high. Sights are already fixed on season two.”

The club is open to all – both men and women, boys and girls. No previous experience or kit is required thanks to generous sponsors and all ability levels welcomed equally. They can be contacted on Facebook at Border City Centurions American Football.
