High speed rail depot in doubt

PLANS for an HS2 train depot in Annandale could be under threat as the UK Government decides whether to pull the plug on phase two of the rail scheme.

Designs have already been drawn up for a train stabling facility, maintenance shed and accommodation building on an 80 hectare site between Kirkpatrick Fleming and Gretna Green, near Cranberry Farm.

It would accommodate up to 28 trains overnight and create about 100 jobs in the area.

The depot is included in phase two of HS2, which would see high speed services extended to Scotland, via Carlisle and Birmingham.

But it’s now in doubt due to the spiralling costs of the first phase, with some estimates saying the total cost could end up at more than £100 billion.
