Pupils enjoy pumpkin picking

PUMPKIN picking fun was the order of the day on Tuesday afternoon for pupils at Caerlaverock Primary School.

They were invited along to the parish pumpkin patch at the village’s community allotment site, next to the Barbour Hall.

And there they got to choose their own pumpkins for Halloween.

The allotments were set up in 2020 and have been a village success story.

There are 12 plots and 17 people are involved, growing everything from potatoes, carrots and parsnips, to cabbages, beans and fruit bushes.

This is the first year, however, for pumpkins and the patch was the brainchild of allotment holder Matt Morgan, pictured above, who didn’t have time to cultivate all his ground.

It resulted in 36 pumpkins and has been really popular, said Rob Wells of Caerlaverock Community Allotments.

“We had the whole school over: 28 kids and three teachers. They all loved it,” he added.

“The allotments are going really well, it was originally just bare earth, a silage field, now each plot is taken. Each plot is completely different.

“In summer all the locals come and take fresh organic veg and give a donation.”

Thanks were also expressed to Caerlaverock Estate and Firth Farm for the use of the land on which the plots are situated.
