Action call on A75 water hazard

FEARS have been voiced about faded road markings and standing surface water on a stretch of busy trunk road near Dumfries.

John Corden, who lives at Pantethhill Cottage, near Mouswald, is lobbying Dumfries and Galloway Council and Scotland TranServ to take immediate action on the A75 near his property amid concerns there could be a serious accident.
He first reported his worries that vehicles may aquaplane or slide on ice when the water freezes last August, and has since sought assistance from the Citizens Advice Bureau.
Outlining the issue, he said: “Tarmac has been laid without proper planning to drainage and to which way the surface water would run.
“The water can only drain off into my garden, causing a landslide and a great deal of damage.
“When there is heavy rain the surface water backs up then runs on the A75 in sheets. This will freeze in the winter time and I do believe someone could get killed – I can see it happening.”
And Mr Corden also says he has found the authorities to be ‘unhelpful and evasive’ to his concerns and is unhappy with the negative response he has received.
He added: “I am doing this to keep my conscience clear in view of any fatality occurring and I won’t feel guilty if someone does get killed as I feel I’ve done my part.”
Responding to the concerns, a spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Council said they are aware of the issue and have passed it onto Scotland TranServ, who manage and maintain the road, to discuss the matter with the landowner.
And a spokeswoman for Scotland TranServ added: “Scotland TranServ are aware of the householders concerns and have previously liaised directly with him on the issue, which we previously identified as being outwith the trunk road boundary.
“However, we will discuss directly with the householder to establish his most recent concerns.”
