WINTRY weather inspired this poem by ER McCarter, published in the Dumfries and Galloway Review in 1948:

Went for a walk but got caught in a blizzard,

I’ve a name for this month, but it sticks in my gizzard-

For hours I toiled through blind sleet,

With numb chilled hands and squelching feet.

An hour I waited for a local train,

In fireless waiting room –

LMS, think again!

Arrived home at last, I stripped to the buff –

In a warm bath at last I found heat enough;

So now, attired in my Sunday best,

Tea over, I sit by the fire for a rest –

But a curse on this weather!

– I truly jalouse

The weather this month’s at its best in the house!

(He wrote this after a February outing)
