AN ANNAN businessman has been named as one of ‘Scotland’s People’ for 2023.
Hardip Atwal was surprised at his work at the Cairndale Hotel in Dumfries by TV presenter Jackie Bird, who presented him with the award.
He was nominated and selected for all his community work, which includes being a special police constable, working as a deputy lord lieutenant for Dumfriesshire, as well as being an avid fundraiser and event organiser.
Among the many good causes he supports is Down Syndrome Scotland and he is also the co-organiser of the Dumfries Multicultural Ball in aid of Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes and Care of Police Survivors.
Said Jackie: “Hardip does so much for his community, we had to salute him.”
He will feature in the Scotland’s People TV show on BBC One Scotland next Wednesday night, December 20, from 8 pm.
Jackie added: “Each year I find the stories featured inspiring and humbling in equal measure, finding out about people who have done so much for others. All of them have incredibly big hearts.”
And Hardip, who was given a British Empire Medal in 2022, is still getting over the shock. He said: “I was so surprised when Jackie and the TV crew turned up.
“It’s a real honour to get this Scotland’s People award. I really enjoy the community work I do and helping others.”
It’s not the only award the dad-of-two has scooped this year, for he is also delighted to be a finalist in the Spirit of Scotland category at this year’s Scottish Asian Business Awards, also for his fundraising and community work.
The winner will be revealed later this month.
