THE shock death of a popular DJ this week sparked memories of working together for a Brydekirk man.
Steve Wright was latterly known for his Radio 2 show, but was a presenter on Radio 1 when Phil Mckay booked him in Cumbria in the 1980s.
Phil Mckay, who runs the Lakeside Castings agency in Carlisle, met the star at the Stanwix Holiday Park in Silloth while working as the entertainments manager there in August 1985.
He said: “It was my job to bring in first class entertainment to the club and at that time Steve Wright was one of the country’s top Radio One DJs, who also presented Top of the Pops and was known for his phone-in characters Mr Angry and Sid the manager.
“When I introduced him on stage the audience went wild and his show was electric.”
And Phil revealed that Steve Wright’s green sludge game inspired his own TV show, ‘Pick A Number’, which ran from 1986 to 1999 on Border TV and Grampian TV and saw green gunge poured over the losing contestant.
Following his appearances at Silloth, Steve would sign autographs then drive straight back to London to be on Radio One the next day.
Phil added: “I would chat to Steve backstage about entertainment and his work on Top of the Pops. I’m lucky enough to still have his old contract and recording of his show at Silloth.
“I always listened to Steve Wright in the afternoon for the last four decades and the death of one of the greatest radio DJs will be such a huge miss.
“I am very glad I got the chance to meet this great DJ and entertainer.”
