A LOCKERBIE church deemed ‘unsafe’ for worship could now be sold on the open market.
The landmark Dryfesdale Parish Church was closed in September due to “numerous issues with fabric, accessibility and facilities” and as it requires significant investment.
The decision was made following in-depth studies and consultations by Annandale and Eskdale Presbytery, looking at church safety, security, accessibility, facilities, flexibility and maintenance costs.
Since then the congregation has combined with that of Hutton and Corrie, and have continued worshipping in the church hall over the road.
And now the Church of Scotland have confirmed that they are considering putting the 19th century building up for sale. A Church of Scotland spokesman said: “We can confirm that Dryfesdale Church in Lockerbie has been deemed unsafe for use and is closed.
“A process is underway that could result in a decision to put the building up for sale on the open market at some stage.
“The congregation is worshipping in the hall across the road from the building and will continue to do so.”
