Birthday boost for arts festival

DUMFRIES and Galloway Arts Festival will celebrate its 45th year in May with continued support from The National Lottery.

The ten-day festival – which runs from May 23 to June 2 – presents a packed programme for its 45th year, supported by £67,000 from The National Lottery in the latest round of Creative Scotland’s Open Fund awards.

With 43 events across 24 venues planned for this year’s festival, the lineup features leading Scottish and UK companies and artists such as Scottish Opera, A Play, A Pie and A Pint, Valtos, James Rowland, The Willow Trio, Conor Burns, Annie Wood, Cirquelation, Tricky Hat’s The Flames and I Am Loud. Also highlighting the region’s home-grown talent including poet Chrys Salt MBE, The Galloway Consort, Aaron Jones, Rachel Walker, Emily Smith and Jamie McLennan with Cairn Chorus and Kate Kyle.

Commenting, festival director and CEO Simon Hart said: “The National Lottery’s support for our 45th anniversary year has been fundamentally important in helping us to maintain our track record of delivering performing arts of the highest quality and ambition to communities large and small throughout our beautiful, largely rural region of Scotland.”

Lorna Duguid of Creative Scotland added: “For 45 years, this festival has been enriching the lives of local residents and the heritage of the region by championing the transformative power of performing arts. The range of artistic offering ensures that everyone will be able to find joy or inspiration in the festival.”
