Model club commemorates anniversary

DUMFRIES Model Flying Club have marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day with a special scale model event featuring various radio-controlled scale models of WWII aircraft.

The fighters sported the black-and-white “Invasion Stripes” markings as painted on Allied aircraft in preparation for D-Day, making them easily identified from the ground so as to avoid being accidentally mistaken for enemy aircraft and shot down by friendly fire.

The Hawker Tempest

As well as Spitfires, a Mustang, a Thunderbolt and a Hawker Tempest were flown, but the highlights of the day were flights by two magnificent four-engined bombers – an RAF Lancaster and a B17 Flying Fortress of the famous “Mighty 8th” Air Force of the USAAF. The event was blessed with warm temperatures, blue skies and a light wind – a perfect day for model flying.

The event was well supported and everyone enjoyed a memorable day. The club can be contacted via our website at dmfc.org.uk and anyone interested in the hobby is welcome to have a free dual-control trial flight.
