Anger after park shelter vandalised

GRAFFITI and scorch marks have been found on a public shelter in a Dumfries park.

And the damage to the wooden shelter in Castledykes Park has devastated The People’s Project, who put it there for community use.

Founder member Mark Jardine said yesterday: “It is so disappointing that a certain group of people have chosen to vandalise the shelter. “The shelter was built during the pandemic to provide local people with a safe space and schools with an outdoor classroom to enjoy the history of Castledykes Park.

“It was a major investment by the People’s Project for the people of Dumfries and Galloway and we shall take every step to deter such behaviour. Our partners, Vigilant Security will increase their patrols and their CCTV surveillance. Anyone with any information should contact me.”

Fellow member Anne Simpson added: “We want everyone of all ages to enjoy the park, but this is wanton vandalism. I do not understand why people want to destroy something which has been admired and appreciated by so many.

“Although the graffiti has been removed – this type of behaviour cannot be repeated and we must all remain vigilant.”

The pine shelter was installed in 2022 after a request from schools to have somewhere to go. It is well used by schools, different organisations, local people and visitors, with many agreeing it’s an asset to the park.

It is covered by CCTV cameras provided by Vigilant Security and anyone witnessing anything suspicious in the park or near the shelter can contact them on 01387 247842.

Meanwhile, the police and community wardens are working together to find those responsible.
