Home ownership is top choice in region

A SNAPSHOT of homes and housing in the region has been provided via the latest census results.

According to the data, the local population is 144,453 people and they are living in 70,633 households.

The majority are in houses of bungalows, with 25,832 detached properties, 21,044 semis and 13,985 terraces.

There are also 9604 flats and 165 in caravans.

Gas is the main form of heating, used in 41,129 homes; next is oil in 12,066 properties; and 7065 run on electric.

Renewable energy use is still low at just 1593, as is biomass/wood on 958, whilst 1333 households have no central heating.

When it comes to household make-up, the biggest type is two people, which accounts for 26,679. Close behind are single person households at 26,445.

At the other end of the scale, in 1855 homes, there are five or more people; and in 49 homes there are eight or more living there.

The numbers who are mortgage free are rising and in this area, 30,384 own their home outright.

In addition, 15,098 have a mortgage; 13,591 are in social rents; 9506 rent privately; and 1704 live rent free.

The statistics were shared by National Records of Scotland and census director Jon Wroth-Smith said: “Today’s figures show that more households in Scotland are mortgage-free than a decade ago.”

Behind the scenes on new Lockerbie drama

A NEW series based on parts of the Lockerbie Disaster is now showing on Sky this week. Featuring Colin Firth and Catherine McCormack, ‘A Search for Truth’ was inspired by the memoirs of Dr Jim Swire, who lost his daughter Flora in the 1988 tragedy. Filming took place in Scotland and Morocco in early 2024 and Annandale Herald editor Fiona Reid went on the set to meet the cast and crew and find out more about it.
