THE Gibson Cup Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament is making a comeback to Beechgrove Tennis Club in Moffat this weekend after a two-decade break.
It will be contested at the club on Sunday following an absence of 24 years.
The magnificent silver trophy was first presented to the club by the Gibson family in 1933. The first winners were J.H. Edgar and W. Gemmell.
Annet Dawson is part of a small team which has worked hard to bring the competition back.
She said: “Unfortunately, the full history of the cup and the Gibson family are lost in history. Any information from readers would be gratefully received.
“The annual event continued until 2000 when the winning pair were Brian and Lyndsay Orr.
“The tournament is open to members of clubs in the Dumfries and Galloway district, such as Annan, Dalbeattie, Dumfries, Kirkcudbright and Lochmaben.
“Our courts can accommodate as many as 24 entrants.”
This restoration event will run with a fun rotational format.
Partners for the first round will be randomly drawn at 10.30 am on Sunday and play will start at 11 am.
Beechgrove Tennis Club chairman Katharine Wilson said: “We’re really excited about bringing back the Gibson Cup Tournament.
“It’s a great opportunity to showcase our wonderful six court facilities and our new sports pavilion which opened in July 2023.
“It is fitting to bring this cup out of storage and continue the long history of Beechgrove Tennis and celebrate Moffat as a historic tennis town.”
