Annan Athletic defeated Montrose 1-0 thanks to the strike from the Dunfermline loan man in the 27th minute of the contest.

Gable Endies shotstopper Cammy Gill was unsuspecting of the audacious lob, which came following a quick free kick. After being caught off his line he raced back towards his goal but was unable to claw the ball away.

As well as praising the goalscorer, Black and Golds boss Wullie Gibson commended his whole team following the victory which moved them up into eighth in the table.

Speaking after the match, Gibson said: “It (the goal) was magnificent. If that doesn’t win goal of the season I don’t know what will.

“I had a wee chat with him (Rhys) before the game, because we were obviously missing our captain Tam Muir and Scott Hooper, our vice captain.

“So he took on the role of captain. He’s just in the door but he’s got good experience.

“He uses his voice well at the back, demands standards and tops his really good performance off with a goal. He got man of the match as well.

“Hopefully, as the games come he will get fitter and stronger because I know he’s not had a lot of game time.

“But it’s a team game, and it was excellent from everybody who was asked to do a job.”

Gibson added: “In terms of what I asked the boys, they carried it out excellently.

“We know, as a group, that we’ve not been at our usual standards in the last few games, and I challenged the boys to make sure that we finished the first quarter with a win.

“We knew Montrose were going to be a tough outfit. They’re a good side and they have been for the last three or four seasons.

“To win the game and to keep a clean sheet was excellent.”
