Alexander in Development Champs action

CANONBIE’S Alexander Shipley was in action last weekend for Annan based boxing club Solway Spartans at Ravenscraig Sports Facility.

The 23-year-old was on in the quarter finals of the Development Championships on Saturday.

It was an early start for the team as they travelled up to the Motherwell venue to get Alexander weighed in and complete his medical before the cut off point.

After that it was a case of refuelling and waiting patiently until the bout at 7 pm.

Alexander boxed Euan Thomson from Trench Boxing Club, Dunfermline in the 86 kg category.

Spartans head coach Terry Bruton said: “Alexander is a 82-83 kg boxer, so we were giving away weight on this one.

“Both boxers endured a long wait to finally get in the ring. Euan was very awkward due to his size, but, Alexander managed to get a win.”

Following arrival back home shortly after 9 pm, the team rested up in order to prepare for the same thing again on Sunday.

Terry added: “After another very long wait we were boxing Brandon Hall from Doghouse Boxing Club in Stirling in the semi finals. After a brave performance we fell short on this one.

“It was frustrating as we know Alexander could box a lot better and beat his opponent, but it was a great learning for him and he’s raring to go again. He has a great attitude and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”

The team now turn their attention to Lennox Rosado who boxes in the semi finals on Saturday.

Lennox has already beat the same opponent in a very tough bout, so it is sure to be a tough contest again.
