CUP DEFEAT . . . the Solway Sharks were beaten by the Bristol Pitbulls

With valuable cup points on the line, the Sharks aimed to establish dominance early. But they ultimately fell to a 2-1 defeat in South West England.

The first period started cautiously as both teams tested the waters, each feeling out their opponents style.

As the game progressed, the Sharks began to find their rhythm, shaking off any remaining stiffness from the long travel. Despite a few power-play opportunities, and some promising scoring chances on both sides, the period ended scoreless.

In the second period, the Sharks stepped up their offensive efforts, and it was not long before their persistence paid off.

A smooth give-and-go sequence between Nolan Gardiner and John Dunbar led to a rebound in the slot, where Callum Boyd capitalised.

Building on this momentum, the Sharks pressed forward, creating multiple power-play chances. However, Pitbulls’ goaltender Tommy Napier proved difficult to beat.

Midway through the period, an unfortunate bounce during a Sharks power play resulted in a misfired pass landing on the stick of Pitbulls forward Bayley Harewood, who sped off and scored a shorthanded breakaway goal.

The final twenty minutes showcased both teams’ offensive prowess. The Sharks managed extended periods of offensive pressure, but continued to be thwarted by Napier’s impressive goaltending.

At the other end, Sharks netminder Jordan Marr held his ground, countering the Pitbulls.

With the game appearing destined for overtime, a late tripping penalty against the Sharks provided Bristol with one last chance.

Defenceman Tanner Butler seized the opportunity, firing in the game-winning goal with just eight seconds left on the clock.

The Sharks will look for redemption this Saturday as they return to home ice to face the Pitbulls at the Shark Tank, determined to rebound from last week’s close contest.

Face-off is at 7 pm, with doors opening at 5.30 pm. Tickets can be purchased on the club’s website, sharksihc.com/tickets/, or in person at Dumfries Ice Bowl.
