Annan fire victim named

THE man who died in Annan on Tuesday has been named as Joseph Ernest Johnston.

THE man who died in Annan earlier this week has been named as Joseph Ernest Johnston.

Emergency services were made aware of a fire at a property on Lady Street around 6.55 am on Tuesday, after the fire was extinguished the 58-year-old body was found within.

Detective Inspector Graeme Robertson said: “Our thoughts are with Joseph’s family and friends at this difficult time and everyone in the local community affected by his death.”

A 33-year-old man appeared at Dumfries Sheriff Court yesterday charged with a murder.

Gabriel Brown, 33, whose address was just given as Dumfries and Galloway, appeared in a private session and made no plea to the charges of murder and wilful fireraising.

Brown has been committed for further examination and will be held in custody until his next appearance.

Since the fire Lady Street has remained closed to traffic, as of this morning pedestrian access to Lady Street has been restored.
