Kirk to host special anniversary service

A SPECIAL service of remembrance and gratitude will be held next month to mark the 36th anniversary of the Lockerbie Air Disaster.

Tundergarth Church will be the setting for the event on Saturday December 21.

It is being billed as a community celebration and is being organised by Tundergarth Kirks Trust and the Pan Am 103 Lockerbie Legacy Foundation.

The aim is to commemorate the unique bond; honour the efforts of the survivors and townspeople; and show gratitude for the response of the many volunteers and first responders that night and afterwards.

The afternoon will feature uplifting performances and verse, as well as the unveiling of a wall of honour display featuring the official emblems of all organisations who dealt with the aftermath of the 1988 crash.

Spokesperson Lori Carnochan said: “We’re putting together a special service for the anniversary this year- a community celebration of gratitude and remembrance. In contrast to previous services, the sentiments will focus on recognising and expressing gratitude for the extraordinary service and humanity shown by the hundreds of responders, volunteers, and locals impacted.

“We have some local performers involved and have already received a positive response from a number of first responder organisations- for example representatives from as far away as Derby Mountain Rescue will be attending.”

She stressed it’s open to all but asked for people to send an email to [email protected] to confirm their attendance so they can prepare for numbers.
